Maca is believed that, due to the plant’s potency, the Incas traditionally restricted its use to the court of royalty. Its reputation is primarily as a virility enhancer and as an aphrodisiac. Early clinical reports suggest its effects are perhaps due to its regulating influence over the endocrine system - specifically, the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. One scientific researcher has stated that in animals Maca results in “significantly higher sperm production and motility rates”. Following the first U.S. study of this Andean Mountain herb, researchers have confirmed Macas aphrodisiac affects in animals.

Tribulus has been used as an aphrodisiac. A number of studies have supported this traditional use as an aphrodisiac, confirming that protodiosin (an isolated constituent of tribulus) has proerectile activity. One such report suggests that protodisin “has been clinically proven to improve sexual desire and enhance erection”.

Epimedium is better known by its common name, Horny Goat Weed. As such a name might imply, this plant is considered an aphrodisiac. In the Chinese system of Medicine, Epimedium is known to increase sexual desire and activity, as well as increase sperm production.

Saw Palmetto is well known for its effects with the prostate. Traditionally, it was said to exert its influence over all the reproductive organs, helping to restore sexual activity after exhaustive excesses. Wherever impotence is due accompanied by nervous exhaustion, Saw Palmetto is said to be useful - particularly when taken with a nervous restorative, such as Wild Oats (see below).

Sarsaparilla is an alterative (blood purifier) that is known for its anti-inflammatory affect with conditions such as psoriasis, rheumatism, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is included in this virility formula for its overall influence on metabolism.

Muira Puama is also commonly known as potency wood. Said to strengthen the digestion and tonify the nervous system - particularly where nervous exhaustion is evident - this rainforest botanical has a reputation as an aphrodisiac.
